International Law

There is so much happening at warp speed back in my homeland. It’s dizzying and hard to keep up. It’s often terribly sad, almost always shocking, and can leave me with a very hopeless feeling. There seems nothing to be done. My complaining about it seems futile…it’s happening. But, staying silent also seems wrong. It’s really hard to figure out how to be productive in these moments.

My voice in a sea of unhappy citizens is important….we need a large and powerful ocean to stop this tide. But, I want to be effective. And, I think where I might be most useful is posting on foreign policy and the international legal order that has kept this globe in the safest period of time in human history. It seems we have a perfect storm of factors which are pulling the international order apart and I fear grave and lasting consequences for everyone across the globe and a shock to Americans as the re-order will likely hit us, perhaps the hardest. So perhaps, to that end, I can at least lend my thoughts and understanding of the geopolitical situation from an international legal perspective. Is it legal to bomb a boat in the middle of international waters? What are the legal implications of it? What are the legal implications for countries supporting Israel, and what are our legal obligations? By focusing on the international legal issues, I hope to add a voice that is productive beyond simply the noise (noise is sometimes necessary though….so let’s not stop speaking out everywhere that we can for as long as we can).
